Our Commitment to Safety

Pet Sit Pros Emergency Preparation

At all times, all Pet Sitters with active assignments must carry 1 gallon of clean drinking water in their vehicles. This water is to be used for animals in the event that normal sources are not safe. The drinking water can be bottled water or tap water. If it is unopened bottled water, it must be unexpired. If it is opened bottled water or tap water, it must be replaced/refreshed within seven days.

All Pet Sitters are required to take a pet first-aid and CPR course. Refresher courses should be taken every two years.

All Pet Sitters are encouraged to carry a first-aid and emergency supply kit in their vehicles.

Earthquake Response

INITIAL PHASE: Assess the event. In the case of an earthquake, determine the location and early magnitude readings and assess early damage reports from local new sources.

COMMUNICATION: Pet Sit Pros primary method of communicating general information will be through our Facebook page. We encourage you to please "like" our Long Beach Facebook page in addition to any other local Pet Sit Pros page you may be following. Secondary method of communication will be through texting directly with your pet sitter. Phone communication is the least reliable form of communication during an emergency.

Events less than 5.0 with epicenter located within or very near your Pet Sit Pros service area:

These events will generally not cause much damage but may cause your pets to become anxious or scared. Pet Sit Pros will notify clients who are away that an event has occurred and your sitter will be available for a Quake Check Visit upon request only to check on your home and pets.

Events greater than 5.0 with epicenter located within or very near your Pet Sit Pros service area:

Quake Check Visits for away clients will be made starting with homes closest to the epicenter. We will make every attempt to reach your home and check on your pets and property. However, due to rescue efforts or emergency situations we may be unable to access your property. If you are able to confirm that your home and pets are okay from a friend or neighbor before we get to your home please notify us that we can skip your Quake Check Visit. We will notify all those out of town clients on the status of their property and pets as soon as possible. All clients will be contacted, even if there is no damage. If a large earthquake occurs during the day, then all dog walking services will be cancelled for the day and replaced with Quake Check Visits unless emergency situations make it impossible to reach your home.

If a client's pet is not safe at the client's home, we will attempt to secure a safe location for the pet. First attempt is to contact the client to find out their preference. Second attempt is to contact emergency contacts of the client who can make decisions on the client's behalf. Third attempt is to locate a neighbor of the client to see if they can safely shelter the pet. If all else fails, we may move the pet to a safe third party location of our choosing that can safely shelter the pet.

If a client's pet is safe at the client's home but the standard water supply may be contaminated, we will supply the clean drinking water for the pet, using the bottled water or other clean water that we carry at all times.

*A Quake Check Visit will consist of a visit to your home to confirm that your pets are safe and to check for any visible damage to your home and property and to check for any odor of a gas leak.

**Quake Check Visits will be billed at your normal visit rate to the credit card on file with Pet Sit Pros.

Wildfire, Mudslide or Other Voluntary Evacuation:

If a client is away and their home falls within an area that is under a voluntary evacuation, we will attempt to contact the client to find out their preference as to whether or not to evacuate the pets. Please keep in mind that a voluntary evacuation can quickly turn into a mandatory one as the situation changes. If the situation rapidly changes emergency personnel may not allow us to enter your neighborhood to evacuate your pets at a later time.

Wildfire, Mudslide or Other Mandatory Evacuation:

If a client is away and their home falls within an area that is under a mandatory evacuation, we will attempt to secure a safe location for the pet. First attempt is to contact the client to find out their preference. Second attempt is to contact emergency contacts of the client who can make decisions on the client's behalf. Third attempt is to locate a friend or neighbor of the client to see if they can safely shelter the pet. If all else fails, we may move the pet to a safe third party location of our choosing that can safely shelter the pet.

* In order to safely evacuate your pets during an emergency, clients should have proper pet carriers, crates or car harnesses available for their pet sitters along with a pet emergency kit including 1 week worth or supplies.

**Evacuation Visits will be billed at our normal hourly rate to the credit card on file with Pet Sit Pros.

Excessive Heat Policy

Pet Sit Pros will implement our Excessive Heat Protocols to protect the safety of our pets and staff. When temperatures are anticipated to skyrocket into the 90’s and 100’s, Pet Sit Pros provides modified Midday, Afternoon & PM visits in our areas that get very hot. Staff may use their judgement to adjust visit times earlier in the day. For dogs, modified visits include a short walk for potty and exercise/playtime in a shaded yard or in the home where dogs will have regular access to water and won't burn their paws on the hot pavement. Our staff are trained to look for signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion. Walks will be done as early in the day as possible. AM, Bedtime and Overnight Visits will not be modified. For cats, there is no modification to visits. If you have AC, please let your sitter know what temp you'd like the thermostat set at. Homes closed up with us away get much hotter than when we are home. Extra water bowls should be put out. If no AC, fans are a must!

Signs of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke include:

-Uncontrollable panting

-Foaming at the mouth

-Tongue and gums bright red

-Capillary Refill time over 2 seconds (push gums until they turn white and count how many seconds until they turn pink again)

-Rapid heart rate

-Vomiting

-Lethargy

-Uncoordinated movements (drunken sailor)
